Senior Living: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Elder couple discussing the pros and cons of senior living.

If our lives are truly the result of the decisions we make, then carefully considering the pros and cons of senior living is an important step in making that decision. Once you understand what each care level offers, you can decide which best suits your needs.

At St. Mark Village, you have access to a full continuum of care: independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and in-patient rehabilitation. Below is some information on the pros and cons of senior living to help guide you on your journey.

Making the decision that works for you: the pros and cons of senior living

Independent Living

As defined by The National Council on Aging, independent living communities are a great option for older adults who are in generally good health but don’t want the burden of home ownership. With more free time, you can pursue your passions, make new friends, travel, start a new fitness regimen or just relax in comfort anytime you choose.

Pros:

  • Choice of living options
  • Freedom from the hassles of chores and home upkeep
  • Wide range of amenities and social opportunities
  • Peace of mind of environment designed for senior safety
  • Independent living residents of St. Mark Village have access to onsite medical care

Cons:

  • Not ideal for those needing assistance with activities of daily living
  • Stress of downsizing
  • Challenge of adjusting to a group environment

Assisted Living

Needing a helping hand with bathing, grooming or medication management can keep you from really enjoying life when you’re living alone at home. Assisted living communities are equipped to help residents manage these daily activities, as well as provide a vibrant atmosphere filled with exceptional amenities, interesting activities, countless opportunities for socializing, nutritious dining, and so much more.

Pros:

  • Onsite medical care that can adapt to changing needs
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Social opportunities and freedom from chores and home upkeep
  • Less caregiver stress and more free time
  • Ability to be daughter, son, husband or wife again versus full-time caregiver

Cons:

  • Intensive medical care or specialized care (memory care) may not be available
  • Can be challenging to adjust to a group environment

Memory Care

Memory care is specifically designed to provide 24-hour care for those living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Other benefits include safety, nutrition, and professional support, as well as activities and programs that provide mental stimulation and interaction.

If you are examining the pros and cons of senior living for a loved one with cognitive issues, it’s important to remember that most cases of dementia eventually advance beyond the abilities of family caregivers, and professional, around-the-clock care becomes necessary.

Pros:

  • Specialized care for Alzheimer’s and dementia including therapeutic programming
  • 24-hour supervision in safe, secure environment
  • The comfort of a structured daily routine
  • Families are no longer on call 24 hours a day
  • Improved quality of life

Cons:

  • Stress of being in an unfamiliar setting
  • Challenges of adjusting to group environment
  • Family members need to adjust to new situation
  • Potentially limited availability

Skilled Nursing

Skilled nursing provides in-patient rehabilitation and medical treatment under the direction of trained medical professionals, usually an onsite licensed physician or nurse. These residents require 24-hour supervised care such as would be provided in a hospital setting. Short-term skilled nursing is available for those recovering from surgery, hospitalization and/or illness who need rehabilitation or more time before returning home.

Pros:

  • Physician, nurse, therapists onsite
  • 24-hour care, monitoring and assistance
  • Social opportunities, activities and nutritious, balanced meals

Cons:

  • Environment may seem more clinical, institutional
  • Lack of privacy
  • Stress of unfamiliar environment
