Solo aging is an experience that many older adults go through, whether by circumstances or by choice. But being on your own is about much more than setting the table for one; it also can be about more choice, more flexibility, rediscovering who you are, and embracing the freedom to make new friends and have the new adventures you’ve always wanted to have.

Solo aging: what does it mean?

Solo agers are seniors without life partners and children who are experiencing aging on their own. Perhaps you always planned to retire solo. Or maybe you and your life partner parted ways, or they have passed away. Or maybe you just never found that special person with whom to share the retirement experience.

Whatever the case, there’s no need to feel left out or lonely. Kinless seniors are a growing segment of the senior population.

  • According to AARP, kinless seniors make up 12% of the population ages 50-plus in the United States.
  • One quarter of baby boomers (born 1946-1964) did not have children and about one-third of Americans aged 45 to 62 are currently single.
  • Approximately 28% of people aged 65 and older—about 22 million older adults—live alone.

There’s even a national day of celebration for solo aging.

Known as SAVvy Day, (Senior Aging Visibility) this new national event is intended to recognize and celebrate the independence, creativity, tenacity, and contributions of solo agers.

It’s a fact: more and more kinless seniors are realizing that solo aging can be a positive and fulfilling experience. Much of it depends upon the environment you choose, how active and engaged you are in your daily life, being willing to reach and connect with those around you to form new friendships, and your overall attitude about healthy aging.

While solo aging can be a very positive experience, it’s also wise to recognize any dangers that come with it.

What is a solo ager? Someone who is charting their path on their own can mean spending a lot of time alone. Isolation is one risk that can have serious negative effects on a person’s emotional, mental, and physical health. Some of these include premature death, dementia, heart attack and stroke, and even hospitalizations and ER visits.

The problem is that often a solo ager is not socially isolated, but can become that way over time, as age-related health declines, and there is no one to rely upon for assistance. But there are ways to combat the threat of isolation.

How can you as a solo ager overcome the risks and thrive?

For sure, it’s important to take care of yourself by eating healthy foods, exercising, getting seven to nine hours of good sleep, and keeping your mind active through activities and learning opportunities.

Another important strategy is to get involved in things that have meaning for you and allow you to connect with others. Such as participating in a volunteer project. Mentoring a young person. Anything that gives you a sense of purpose and belonging, which is vital for healthy aging.

If you have an extended family, it’s only natural to hope they will be there to help care for you as you grow older. However, this often is not the case, as family members can spend their time working on careers, caring for their children, or taking care of their own chronic health conditions. They also might not live in the same area as you.

Senior living can be an answer. Instead of depending upon loved ones to attend to your needs, you’ll have a team of professionals dedicated to supporting your health, happiness, and well-being. And you’ll benefit from a lifestyle of engagement and connection.
